Must-have tools and integrations we set up for every Shopify store before starting SEO work. Updated for 2025–2026 with latest platform changes.
1. Google Search Console
What it does: Shows how your store appears in Google search. Tells you which keywords bring traffic, how many clicks you get, and if Google has problems crawling your site.
Cost: Free
Priority: Must have — do this first
Key things to monitor
- Performance tab: Clicks, impressions, CTR, average position. Now includes AI Overview data
- Pages tab (formerly Coverage): Which pages Google has indexed, which have errors
- Experience → Core Web Vitals: LCP, INP (replaced FID in March 2024), CLS — for both mobile and desktop
- Sitemaps: Confirm Google received your sitemap
- Shopping tab: Shows product listing issues if you use Google Merchant Center
2. Google Analytics 4 (GA4)
What it does: Tracks everything on your store — page views, add-to-cart events, purchases, bounce rate, session duration, traffic sources. GA4 is event-based and fully replaced Universal Analytics.
Cost: Free (GA4 360 is paid for enterprise)
Priority: Must have
Key reports to check weekly
- Traffic Acquisition: Where visitors come from (Organic, Paid, Social, Direct)
- Landing Page report: Which pages people visit first
- Ecommerce Purchases: Products selling, revenue by source
- Engagement Rate: Replaced bounce rate — shows active engagement (sessions >10s, 2+ pages, or conversion)
- Explore → Funnel Analysis: Custom funnels (product view → cart → checkout → purchase)
2025–2026 Updates
- GA4 now has AI-powered insights — automatically surfaces anomalies and trends
- Consent Mode v2 is required for EU/EEA traffic. Use Shopify's Google channel for automatic compliance
- Key Events replaced "Conversions" as terminology
- Attribution models: Data-driven attribution is now the default (last-click is deprecated for new properties)
3. Google Tag Manager (GTM)
What it does: A container for all tracking codes (pixels, scripts) without editing theme code.
Cost: Free
Priority: Recommended (but note Shopify's new approach below)
2025–2026 Update — Shopify Web Pixels
Shopify now recommends using Customer Events (Web Pixels) instead of traditional GTM for better privacy compliance and performance. Web Pixels run in a sandboxed environment and respect customer consent automatically.
- For Google tags: Use Shopify's Google & YouTube channel app — it handles GA4 + Google Ads + Consent Mode
- For Facebook/Meta: Use Shopify's Facebook & Instagram channel app
- For custom tracking: Use Settings → Customer Events → Add Custom Pixel in Shopify Admin
- GTM is still useful for server-side tagging if you need advanced tracking control
4. Bing Webmaster Tools
What it does: Same as GSC but for Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and importantly — AI assistants (Copilot, ChatGPT search).
Cost: Free
Priority: Recommended — more important than ever
Why it matters in 2025–2026
Bing powers Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT's web search, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, and Ecosia. With AI search growing, Bing index coverage directly affects your visibility in AI assistants. Also supports IndexNow for instant content discovery.
5. Schema Markup (Structured Data)
What it does: Helps Google understand your products. Shows star ratings, prices, availability, and shipping info directly in search results.
Cost: Free (built into most modern Shopify themes)
Priority: Must have
Schema types for Shopify (2025–2026)
- Product: Price, availability, ratings, images, SKU, brand, shipping, return policy
- Organization: Business info, logo, social profiles, contact
- BreadcrumbList: Navigation path (Home > Collection > Product)
- Article: For blog posts — author, date, headline
- FAQ: Questions and answers — can appear in AI Overviews
- LocalBusiness: If you have a physical store
- Video: For product videos and tutorials
- HowTo: For guide/tutorial content
New in 2025
- Merchant listing experiences: Google now shows free product listings with enhanced data from structured data + Google Merchant Center
- Product variants in schema: Google now supports showing size/color variants directly in search
- Return policy and shipping: Add
shippingDetailsandhasMerchantReturnPolicyfor richer results
6. Facebook/Meta Pixel (Conversions API)
What it does: Tracks visitors from Facebook/Instagram. Required for retargeting ads and conversion optimization.
Cost: Free (tracking is free, ads cost money)
Priority: Must have if running paid social
2025–2026 Update
- Conversions API (CAPI) is now essential — browser-side pixel alone misses 20–40% of events due to ad blockers and iOS privacy. Shopify's Meta channel app sets up both Pixel + CAPI automatically
- Advantage+ campaigns require good conversion data — CAPI ensures this
- Set up through Shopify's Facebook & Instagram channel (not manual code)
